Using Google Chrome with Multiple Accounts

chromeDo you have both a personal Google account and an FCPS Google Account? Do you ever need to log into Office365 or Google for Education as another student or staff member to help troubleshoot an issue? If you’ve answered yes to either question keep reading…

Chrome will allow you to have multiple browser windows open at the same time logged in as different users. These different users can have different homepages, bookmarks, themes, etc…

Scenario 1

A student or teacher needs help with Office365 or Google for Education. You need to see what they see when they log into the sites. You want to do this on your computer, but don’t want to have to log off the computer or have to log out of anything you currently have open on your computer.

Solution: Use an Incognito window.

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Click on the 3 lines in the top right corner
  3. Click New incognito window
  4. A new window will open

Incognito may not be the best term for Google to have used. As the image to the right says, Incognito mode is not a way to hide what you are doing on our network. Instead its a way to use the browser without it trying to remember a bunch of “stuff” like usernames, cookies, etc… This makes its great for troubleshooting accounts that you don’t plan to continue using on your computer. Other than remembering this “stuff” the Incognito window works just like the normal browser window.

Scenario 2

You want to be able to swap between your personal Google account and your FCPS Google account and use different bookmarks, homepage, theme, etc… for each account. Note: Gmail still will not work while using our network since it is blocked by the State.

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Click on the 3 lines in the top right cornerpeople
  3. Click Settings
  4. Scroll down to the People section
  5. Click Add person…
  6. Choose a picture (optional)
  7. Give the person a name. Example: “Dave FCPS”
  8. Click Add
  9. Rename your current person if you want to
  10. Close the Settings tab

Now at the top right-hand side of the Chrome window you should see one of the “people” you created.

You can right click on the name to swap between the different people. You can also open multiple Chrome windows and have one showing one person and the other window showing a different person.
