Hands off Apple’s Handoff feature

With the release of Apple’s iOS 8 software Apple added a new feature that allows users to start a task such as reading a website, writing an email, etc… on one Apple device and pick up where you left off on another device. This sounds good for personal devices, but I’m not sure it’s such a good idea on iPad carts. Handoff works between devices that use the same iCloud account. In our environment, usually entire carts/groups of iPads use the same iCloud account.

Here’s Apple’s description:

“Handoff lets you pick up right where you left off.
Now you can start writing an email on your iPhone and pick up where you left off when you sit down at your Mac. Or browse the web on your Mac and continue from the same link on your iPad. It all happens automatically when your devices are signed in to the same iCloud account. Use Handoff with favorite apps like Mail, Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Maps, Messages, Reminders, Calendar, and Contacts. And developers can build Handoff into their apps now, too.”

As of right now, you cannot disable Handoff using MDM, but you can disable it on the device if you want to.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to General > Handoff & Suggested Apps
  3. Turn off Handoff

Update 11/3/14: Handoff can now be turned off in the Meraki Dashboard
